From Summer Workout to State Champion: Taylor Woodson’s Journey

by | Jun 28, 2023

Taylor Woodson is an up-and-coming basketball standout from suburban St. Louis who’s just earned a spot on the Michigan Women’s basketball team. With her boundless energy, strength, and determination displayed through her relentless pursuit of excellence as evidenced by her four state championship appearances, it is clear she is ready to set college basketball alight in the years ahead.

Taylor Woodson was entering seventh grade when a coach at a summer workout boldly invited the soon-to-be varsity players to join him upstairs for stretching. Even though the roster wasn’t officially set, Woodson accepted the challenge and went upstairs with the confidence of a future star. Her determination paid off that fall as she made the varsity team and, by eighth grade, was a starter on a state championship-winning team – one of two she would go on to win in her career. Now ranked No. 59 in ESPN’s 2023 class, Woodson is ready to bring her well-rounded game to the Michigan women’s basketball team this year.

Hopkins head coach Tara Starks even praised Woodson’s ability, saying “You just don’t see kids that size with the mobility and the ability to handle the ball, make the right pass, and shoot the midrange like she does. She’s capable of doing everything and can play multiple positions.” Despite suffering an ankle injury in her senior season, Woodson was still able to come back to help secure important late-season wins, regularly getting a steal or an and-one to swing the momentum. With her determination and talent, Woodson is ready to take on the next steps of her basketball career.

Taylor Woodson has been successful in achieving her goal of helping her team win, as her high school career saw her reach the state championship game in four of the five years it was played. With help from former teammate, Paige Bueckers and other talented players, Woodson proved herself to be a leader on the court with her energy, toughness, and versatility, according to Michigan head coach Kim Barnes Arico. Barnes Arico praised Woodson for her dynamic ability off the bounce and her strength in rebounding.

After strongly considering her hometown school, Minnesota, Woodson made the proud decision to call Michigan her home and begin her journey as a Wolverine. She believes her size and strength allow her to play right away, and is excited to reconnect with fellow incoming freshmen Macy Brown and Katy Eidle, as well as participate in the program’s summer trip to Italy.

Woodson’s competitive nature was nurtured in her seventh-grade days, and she has since used it to achieve success on the court. She is determined to continue pushing herself to reach even greater heights at Michigan.

Woodson has truly made her mark as an incredible player with a determination to attack adverse situations while also elevating her team to levels of success on and off the court. She exemplifies the spirit, talent, and drive that factors into creating a championship-caliber team as evidenced by the four appearances the Michigan women’s basketball program reached in the state championship game during her high school career. Coming onto the University campus, Woodson now looks to bring her unique mix of determination and talent to take on more accolades and success at the collegiate level. With what she has already accomplished, what more can we expect of this amazing young woman?
