Ann Arbor, known for its vibrant food scene, is a haven for food enthusiasts seeking exceptional cuisine and innovative beverages. In this article, join Chuck and Brenda from Life in Michigan as they embark on a culinary adventure during Ann Arbor Restaurant Week. From the traditional Korean flavors at Miss Kim to the fusion delights at Peridot and the cozy charm of Blom Meadworks, they explore the diverse culinary landscape of Ann Arbor, sharing their first-hand experiences.

Exploring Miss Kim

Located in the Kerrytown district, Miss Kim, owned by Chef Ji Hye Kim, offers a unique twist on Korean cuisine. Chef Ji Hye Kim, a four-time James Beard Award nominee, crafts dishes that reflect her vibrant personality and passion for the cuisine. Chuck and Brenda were treated to an array of Korean side dishes, each with its own story and flavor profile. From a broccolini and walnut dish with a delightful fish sauce caramel to a garnish of cilantro inspired by a North Korean town’s culinary preferences, every dish at Miss Kim was exceptional.

Discovering Peridot

Peridot, Chef Duc’s new restaurant on W Liberty Street, offers a fusion of craft cocktails and Vietnamese-inspired food. Chuck and Brenda were enchanted by the mixologists’ skill at the bar and indulged in the flavors of Peridot’s Restaurant Week menu. They couldn’t resist trying the Ketchup Fried Rice, a nostalgic dish with a personal touch. Chef Duc’s homage to his father’s cooking included the unconventional addition of ketchup, which has become one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes. Peridot’s communal dining experience, perfect for sharing with friends, added to the overall enjoyment.

Unwinding at Blom Meadworks

Blom Meadworks, located on S 4th Ave, provided Chuck and Brenda with a delightful end to Ann Arbor Restaurant Week. Contrary to popular belief, the meads at Blom Meadworks are dry and sophisticated, akin to fine wines. The cheerful and casual atmosphere, coupled with outstanding beverages, made it a perfect setting to relax with friends. Chuck and Brenda sampled the Restaurant Week special, accompanied by delicious snacks such as MI White fish, Hand Pie, and a winter Citrus Tart.

Behind the Scenes with Behind the Mitten

Chuck and Brenda also had the opportunity to join Amy Sherman and John Gonzalez on their travel radio show and podcast, “Behind the Mitten.” The show offered an intriguing glimpse into Ann Arbor’s culinary scene, featuring interviews with local chefs and restaurateurs. From Chad Wiebesick with Destination Ann Arbor to Chef Duc with Pacific Rim, the show provided behind-the-scenes details and stories that added depth to the culinary journey.
